Questions About the Products We Sell

Can't I just buy sunscreen anywhere? Why SunSavvy?

Most sunscreens sold in stores are chemical sunscreens. SunSavvy only sells mineral sunscreens, which are often hard to find in stores. And if you do find them, there typically aren’t many options to choose from. SunSavvy offers a wide variety of mineral sunscreens, and we’re adding more all the time, so you’re sure to find one that fits your and your family’s needs.

Mineral sunscreens? I don’t want to look pasty white!

Mineral sunscreens used to have a bad rap for being difficult to apply, and making your face and skin look unhealthily white. But with so many new and better products on the market, we’ve really moved into the next generation of mineral sunscreens, including clear, non-whitening options.

What’s the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens?

The short answer: Mineral sunscreens block UV rays, while chemical sunscreens absorb them. We promote and sell mineral sunscreens, because chemical sunscreens are increasingly linked to possible human health and reproductive risks, and are now known to damage coral reefs. Mineral sunscreens seem to be the safer choice.

Where can I find the latest information about sunscreens?

The do’s and don’ts of what SPF is best to use, or an ingredient to avoid really does seem to change every year. That’s because sunscreen science is rapidly evolving and improving. But you just want the safest, most effective natural sun protection for yourself and your family without spending half the weekend doing research. That’s where SunSavvy comes in. We’ll stay on top of all the latest sunscreen product information, then keep you updated through our blog, email newsletter, and alerts.

    Are mineral sunscreens natural?

The active ingredients in mineral sunscreens, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, occur in nature, so they are considered natural. But they’re difficult to extract from natural sources in sufficient quantities, so the zinc oxide and titanium dioxide found in sunscreens is re-created in a lab.

Some argue that means the product is not technically “natural.” But in our view, reproducing a compound that occurs naturally is just about quality control to make reliable products, not false marketing. Manufacturers use triple-distilled water in their products to ensure the water is 100% pure, but no one would argue that water isn’t natural. Mineral sunscreen manufacturers also pride themselves on using only natural and plant-derived substances for their inactive ingredients.

On this basis, we're comfortable using the term "natural" to describe mineral sunscreens.

My sunscreen says it’s fragrance free. So why does it have a scent?

Fragrance free simply means that no fragrances were added to the product to alter its scent. But the ingredients used in mineral sunscreens often have a natural scent of their own, and the combination of these scents is what you smell. Sunscreen manufacturers strive to minimize these scents by adjusting their formulas and processes, but there is no such thing as a completely unscented mineral sunscreen.

Most of the sunscreens we carry have a very mild scent. But scent is subjective, so it’s often just a matter of personal preference to find a sunscreen that you prefer.
